Throwback Thurrr...Friday - Goof Troop

Welcome to another Throwback Thursday, our weekly look into my Top 100 games and general nostalgia.  Sorry for the delay folks; Thursday seemed to sneak past me somehow.  This week's game: The game of sliding blocks and tossed coconuts that is Goof Troop.

Released in the US on July 11th, 1993, Goof Troop was an action-adventure co-op video game developed and released by Capcom for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).  As such, the game is full of incredibly catchy tunes and sound effects in which Capcom was king of in that era.  Seriously, check out the below video and feel the triumph that is picking up items in this game.

Players control either Goofy or Max in this game as they fight buccaneers and solve puzzles across pirate's island.  Goofy is the stronger character, but Max is light and moves faster.  Neither character has any combat abilities directly, so they must make use of items and objects found around the island.  Players will pick up and toss coconuts and barrels at baddies, or lore goons with the ringing of a bell, only to kick a sliding block crushing everyone in its path.  The game's action and gameplay have a flavorful puzzle element to it as players make use of the environment, which is still unique and stands out even with games found today.

Speaking of puzzles, for those who enjoy the sliding block puzzles often found in The Legend of Zelda series, Goof Troop is full of them, all of which are well-designed and require a good balance of thought and action at times to solve.  By the time you get to the final level of the game, the puzzles will have you scratching your collective heads as you carefully try to coordinate the correct paths for success, of which is so satisfying once solved.

The game may be on the short side, with only five levels and able to be completed in 1-2 hours.  But as a unique cooperative experience with creative combat and clever puzzles, it certainly is a game worth a play.

Fun Fact: Goof Troop is one of Shinji Mikami's first few games developed, who would later be known as the father of the survival horror game genre with the early Resident Evil games.
