Welcome to another edition of Tabletop Tuesday - Your weekly exploration into games of dice, cards, luck and more of the Tabletop world.
This week's game...the game of keepers and creepers that is Fluxx.
Players: 2-6 Players
Time: 10-30 minutes
Genre: Casual Card Game
Fluxx is a very easy to learn card game that slowly develops into a more complex and unpredictable mess of fun. Each player starts with 5 cards and the same two rules: Each turn, you must draw a card and play a card. There are 5 types of cards in the game: Keepers which are played in front of you (typically needed to meet Goals); these can include things like Milk, Cookies, Dreams, Peace, Love, the Moon, etc. Creepers are played in front of players and typically prevent them from winning the game. Goals are put in the middle and determine how to win the game; these can include things like Hippyism, where Peace and Love are needed to win the game, etc. Any new Goals played replace the current Goal. Action cards are one-time use cards that perform a specific action, and then are discarded. And finally, Rule cards are put in the middle and add new rules to the game. Some rules like Draw 2 replace other rules of the same nature, so the Draw 2 rule would replace the Draw 1 rule that is set as the initial rule at the start of the game. New rules immediately go into effect and must be adhered to.
Due to the unpredictable nature of ever changing goals, rules, and actions in this game, players are always on their toes in this chaotic game. But the random, crazy nature of this game is a large part of its appeal and makes for a unique experience with each play. Some matches may be over in a matter of minutes while others will be epic tug-of-wars to claim victory. I recommend this game for those who enjoy loose and simple gameplay. And if you're a fan of themed games, Fluxx comes in many, many themes, including Adventure Time, Batman, Firefly, Pirates, Zombies, and Monty Python just to name a few.
If you have any questions about Fluxx, be sure to ask in the comments. Otherwise, look forward to future installments of Tabletop Tuesday!
