Throwback Thursday - F-Zero GX

Welcome to another Throwback Thursday, our weekly look into my Top 100 games and general nostalgia.  Crashing into the finish line this week: The game of blue falcons and high speed action that is F-Zero GX.

Released in the US on August 25th, 2003, F-Zero GX is the result of  fruitful collaborative efforts between Nintendo and Sega, and perhaps one of the most thrilling racing games ever made.  Players would choose from a colorful cast of characters, aliens, and robots alike as they gear up to race on all sorts of mind-bending and twisted tracks.  Each ship in the game was also as much of a character, offering a distinct look and style, of which the acceleration vs speed stats could be adjusted to the player's fancy.  While racing up and around these insane tracks, each ship is given a shield meter, to which after the first lap, players could choose to boost in exchange for their shield energy.  It was a frantic and nerve-wrecking balance as players raced along at high speeds with these delicate controls and tight turns, requiring unrelenting focus and attention.

Throwback Thursday - Pokemon Snap

Welcome to another Throwback Thursday, our weekly look into my Top 100 games and general nostalgia.  Striking a pose this week: The game of on rails photo trails that is Pokemon Snap.

Released in the US on June 30th, 1999, Pokemon Snap offered the first foray of Pokemon into the world of 3D on the Nintendo 64, and may be in my personal opinion the best representation of the Pokemon universe.  Players take control of Todd Snap, a Pokemon photographer, who is set with the task to build a portfolio of quality photos for Professor Oak's records.  To accomplish this, players hop on an automated buggy vehicle and visit different parts of the island, taking up to 60 pictures per trip.  Players will need to keep a watchful eye for the various Pokemon that inhabit each area.  As your journey continues, you'll become equipped with apples, Pester Balls, and a flute to interact in various ways while riding, luring out new Pokemon or uncovering new paths.  At the end of each photo shoot, players will then submit one photo for each type of Pokemon taken, receiving a score determined by elements such as composition, size, pose, and more.  It's a fun and clever mechanic that encourages repeated play as players strive for the best pictures and the highest course scores.

Throwback Thursday - Pokemon (series)

Welcome to another Throwback Thursday, our weekly look into my Top 100 games and general nostalgia.  Emerging from the tall grass this week: The games of wandering children obsessed with collecting that is the Pokemon series.

It all began with the 1st generation of Pokemon with Pokemon Red and Green released in Japan on February 27th, 1996, and then nearly two and half years later with Pokemon Red and Blue, breaking international shores in the US.  Part of the reason for this lengthy delay was the localization process required the entire game to be reprogrammed from scratch due to the delicate state of the game's source code.  Nintendo also feared for the reception and appeal of these cute monsters by American audiences, allegedly spending over 50 million dollars to promote the games.  Despite these challenges, Pokemon was met with massive success, growing to be second best-selling video game franchise, behind only Nintendo's own Mario franchise.

Throwback Thursday - Super Mario 3D Land

Welcome to another Throwback Thursday, our weekly look into my Top 100 games and general nostalgia.  Challenging our perception this week: The game of side-scrolling mixed with free roaming that is Super Mario 3D Land.

Released in the US on November 3rd, 2011, Super Mario 3D Land proved to be a unique Mario experience in the series as it expertly blended gameplay elements of both 2D and 3D Mario games.  While most levels stick to a linear path as is typical of side-scrolling games, the players are able to freely move about the levels with the extra depth in this game, providing clever means to further interact and maneuver in the environments.  In fact, the concept of depth proved to be a key focus and driving force in this game, which is fitting for what was a core feature of the newly launched Nintendo 3DS.  Every level was stunningly staged to emphasize this depth, be it scaling a steep mountain or avoiding oncoming Bullet Bills and protruding pillars.  This added depth also provided excellent means for additional nooks and crannies to stuff each level with little secrets to be found, as well as crafty puzzles that play with perception.  The game is just bursting with polished, creative ideas as is to be expected from the development team who helped craft masterpieces the likes of the Super Mario Galaxy games.

Happy New Year - Top 5 Anticipated Games of 2018

As we look ahead to the new year, there is a glimmer of excitement and wonder to behold, with high expectations as to what this year will bring us.  While I typically recommend tempering one's expectations, let's go ahead and let loose for a moment and marvel at the possibilities of tomorrow.  Here are my personal Top 5 Anticipated Games of 2018:

(Note: This only includes announced games with a set release date for 2018)

-1- Kingdom Hearts III

Ever since the release of Kingdom Hearts II much over 10 years ago now, fans have eagerly been awaiting what would be the conclusion to this enchanting trilogy.  There have been a slew of side stories, spin-offs, and re-releases of the franchise in the interim, but the core numbered entries of Kingdom Hearts I & II remain the most endearing.  Fortunately, that wait looks to be approaching its conclusion as well, with a confirmed release year during the latest tease of the Toy Story world.  And looking at this preview, the game looks to be well worth the wait, capturing the world in stunning detail with incredible animation and overflowing imagination.  And amazingly enough, there is still so little known about this game, which will surely let our own imaginations continue to soar as we excitedly await its release.
