Tabletop Tuesday - Smash Up

Welcome to another edition of Tabletop Tuesday - Your weekly exploration into games of dice, cards, luck, and more of the Tabletop world.

This week's game...the game of alien abductions and ninja minions that is Smash Up.

Players: 2-4
Time: 45-60 minutes
Genre: Strategy Card Game

Smash Up is a game consisting of eight themed decks: Pirates, Ninjas, Wizards, Dinos, Zombies, Robots, Aliens, and Tricksters (aka Gremlins / Gnomes).  The core concept of this game is you take two of these decks and SMASH them together to get wild and wacky combinations of Dino Pirates vs Ninja Zombies and so on.  Using these unique combinations, players will then play actions and minions to destroy bases, earn victory points, and win the game.  A base's busting point however is determined by all players' minions on a base, so whoever has the greatest total power on a base will earn the greater rewards associated with that base.  As such, it's an interesting battle of deciphering where you efforts should be directed and trying to anticipate your opponents' actions.

Each deck class comes with a unique playing style and gameplay mechanics, of which when combined with one another makes for an evening more interesting flavor.  Trying new combinations and finding the synergy between them gives this game near endless replay-ability and makes for many fun and unique experiences.  Of course, this game is also prime for additional themes and classes, of which there are numerous expansions to be found, making for more fascinating and delightfully absurd combinations.  With more expansions, more players can also be included, though you may find 3-4 players to be the ideal number still for a more refined and manageable gameplay experience.  I recommend this game for those who enjoy strategy, crazy combos, and a fair bit of math.

If you have any questions about Smash Up, let me know in the comments.  And stay tuned to hear more about other Smash Up expansions and more in future installments of Tabletop Tuesday!
