Throwback Thursday - Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

Welcome to another Throwback Thursday, our weekly look into my Top 100 games and general nostalgia.  This week's destination: The game of swashbuckling and alluring dancing that is Shantae and the Pirate's Curse.

Released in the US on October 23rd, 2014, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is the third game in the Shantae series.  Continuing the events of Risky's Revenge, Shantae lives the life of an ordinary human now with no genie powers.  When her rival Risky Boots notices her minions disappeared and turned into evil Cacklebats, an unlikely alliance is formed with Shantae to retrieve the dark magic and prevent the resurrection of an evil Pirate Master.

Much like the earlier entries in the series, this game is commonly compared to the Metroidvania formul, in that it features some solid platforming fun combined with great exploration and clever upgrades / tools to unlock.  Players will travel from island to island, whipping baddies with her sharp ponytail, and collecting various items like Heart Squids and more.  As Shantae is a normal human in this game, she no has transformations, but rather collects pirate gear to aid in her combat and traversal.  These include a pistols to shoot enemies and switches from afar and a pirate hat to glide across great distances to name a few.  All in all, it keeps pace for some great action and skillful play.  It also features a great sense of humor and a captivating art style to boot, if you don't mind a little fan service.

As I am writing this post pre-E3, I'm crossing my fingers Nintendo will make a long overdue Metroid announcement.  But in the event that the wait continues, Shantae stands in to deliver a respectable and joyous alternative to fill that Metroid itch.
