Throwback Thursday - Rhythm Heaven

Welcome to another Throwback Thursday, our weekly look into my Top 100 games and general nostalgia.  On the menu this week: The game of quick flicks and neat beats that is Rhythm Heaven.

Released in the US on April 5th, 2009, Rhythm Heaven is a quirky music game for the Nintendo DS in which players tap, flick, and slide to the beats of strange, musical narratives.  At the end of each song, players are then ranked for their accuracy and precision, which determines your ending to the nonsensical story and offers added reason for multiple plays aside from how groovy and catchy these tunes are.  Every fifth level in the game also features a unique remix, which fuses the mechanics and melodies from past songs into a funky new jam that really puts players to the test.

The conception of Rhythm Heaven is credited to Nintendo programmer Kazuyoshi Osawa, known for previous work on the WarioWare titles, of which the quirky sense of humor and influences are very apparent in this game.  From the obnoxious shouts of a glee club to a Moai doo-wop duo, there is no end of joy to be had from this odd personality.  Also similar to the WarioWare series, there are an odd assortment of mini-games and knick-knacks to collect as you collect medals and higher rankings in the game.  One of my personal favorite mini-games include a quartet of glass tappers who tap and flick wine glasses to console and entertain the ladies at the bar.  This mini-game has no end, in which players will go for a high score.  Every 8 verses, the pace increases, the patterns get more complicated, and new strange guests take the seats of which their reactions can be hilarious if you weren't so focused on keeping pace.

If you have a fondness for weird humor and memorable tunes, Rhythm Heaven is most certainly worth a look.  If unable to find this game, Rhythm Heaven Megamix is also available on the Nintendo 3DS eshop, which compiles songs from the entire Rhythm Heaven series from GBA to Wii.  So have a laugh and rock on!
