Tabletop Tuesday - Taboo

Welcome to another edition of Tabletop Tuesday - Your weekly exploration into games of dice, cards, luck and more of the Tabletop world.

This week's game...the game of unspeakable fun that is the classic Taboo.

Players: 4+
Time: 20-30 minutes*
Genre: Social / Party Game

Taboo is incredibly easy game to understand, but deceptively tricky once playing.  Players split into equal teams, in which one player of that team each round will try to get their teammates to guess words from a deck of cards.  As the name of the game implies though, players cannot say the given word, nor the five words listed underneath it.  Should they accidentally say one of the words, the other team will be monitoring and will buzz/squeak the player (depending on the version), causing the other team to win a point for that word.  Players are also not allowed to make any gestures, making it a complete battle of the words.  It's a careful dance of taking your time so as not to slip up and hurrying in an effort to score more points.

The keys to success in Taboo as is the case in many team-based games is playing to your teammates strengths.  Having an understanding of your teammates scope of knowledge on subjects and being able to incorporate inside anecdotes can make all the difference in scoring big and knowing when to move on past a word.  But sometimes the thrill of a challenging word can be half the fun.  When it gets down to it, Taboo is just a fun social game that encourages creative thinking and sharing laughs at the wild workarounds those will attempt at reaching a word.  I recommend this game for those who are fast thinkers and for large groups.

If you have any questions about Taboo, let me know in the comments below.  Otherwise, stay tuned to future installments of Tabletop Tuesday.  And happy gaming!
