Welcome to another edition of Tabletop Tuesday - Your weekly exploration into games of dice, cards, luck and more of the Tabletop world.
This week's game...the game of comical comparisons that is Apples to Apples.
Players: 4+
Time: 30-60 minutes
Genre: Social / Party Game
Apples to Apples is a very simple and accessible party game, whose popularity spawned an influx of similarly card-matching / answer-judging party games, such as the more adult-oriented Cards Against Humanity. In this game, players are dealt a hand of red apples, each with various nouns and a description if needed. Each round, one player acts as the judge and draws a green apple with an adjective (and synonyms if needed). The other players must pick one of their red apples best suited (or worst suited) for the green apple. Each card is placed face-down and then shuffled for the judge to select as they see fit. Whomever's card is selected wins the green apple. First person to obtain a predetermined amount of green apples wins the game. A very straightforward and simple concept, but the selection process is often much more unexpected and comical than what you may expect.
Players will find many a scenario where they think they have the perfect word at hand, or a whole lot of nothing that remotely relates to what is needed. But as many players will be in the same shoes, no card is necessarily a bad play as you a whole slew of loosely related nouns are revealed. It's all about knowing your judge and playing the audience. Some players like to play very literally while others go for the best laugh. All in all, it's a great and casual way to connect with friends and family. And there are many expansions and variations for those looking for expanded word selection if played enough (the base version comes with 108 adjectives and 324 nouns). I recommend this game for those who are looking for a social experience and enjoy plenty of silliness.
